So, you’ve decided to redesign your business’ website, or perhaps this is your first ever site?
Think of the website as a virtual shop front for your business: it has to be both functional and visually appealing.
You wouldn’t head into a store that has a broken door or a messy shop window, right? Or at least, you wouldn’t expect the products inside to be any good.
It works in very much the same way in the digital world.
We’ve identified five questions you should ask yourself before designing a website for your business.
1. Why am I doing it?
This applies especially to those who already have a website but are looking into a redesign. Consider why you are going down this route, rather than sticking with your current design.
It could be that it is not solving a particular problem, it could be that your company has evolved since you first published the site, or it could even be that your business model has shifted.
Investing in a website overhaul just for the sake of it is often a waste of time, energy and money, so be sure to think seriously about the reasons behind the rebrand.
2. What purpose is the website serving?
This part might seem straightforward, but really think about what the site is trying to achieve.
It may be that you’re trying to sell a product or service, curating a portfolio for your work, or creating a resource for your customers. Whatever it is, the website needs to be able to easily do the thing you’re trying to accomplish, as well as have a strong call-to-action.
Moreover, once you understand what it’s for, you can begin to think about how it will look and what it needs to contain.
3. Who is my target audience?
Before you start designing your website, you must also understand who you’re trying to engage with. This is probably the same group of people that your brand is trying to reach out to.
From here, you can start to think about the colours, fonts, style and tone of the website in a way that best communicates with your ideal customers.
4. How is it going to stand out from your competitors?
Whatever your business is, it’s highly likely that you have some competition out there.

Ensuring that your website is fresh and has the ability to grab the user’s attention can make all the difference when redesigning your site.
5. Is it going to convert to sales?
At the end of the day, a business’ main purpose is to make money and share their products and services.
And, if you’re investing a sum of money into creating a website, you want to be sure that it is going to generate leads and sales.
It may be worth researching CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation), or talking to a professional to find out how you can encourage people to complete the call-to-action you set out earlier (question 2).
